Mom, I Have Something to Tell You

A short documentary that explores the life-changing impact of one conversation- and the special bond between gay sons and their mothers

About the Film

Many people know what follows the words “Mom, I have something to tell you”—it’s the start of a coming-out journey. But what happens next, and how a mother responds, can shape a gay son’s emotional and mental well-being for life.

This 30-minute documentary brings that reality to the screen, exploring the unique—and often under-recognized—relationship between gay sons and their mothers.

Mom, I Have Something to Tell You has already received critical acclaim and earned honors including the LGBTQ+ Theme Recognition Award, the Viewer Impact Award, and the Inspirational Award at the Best Shorts Competition.

A Bond Worth Talking About

Historically, mothers have often been the first—and sometimes only—person a gay son confides in. Yet while many sons find solace in their mothers’ support, those same mothers often find themselves isolated, navigating love and loyalty in families and communities that may not understand.

This film brings together years of interviews and research to shed light on this deeply personal, often unspoken bond—and the power it holds to transform lives and families.
